Variation in Symptom Development and Infectivity of Banana Bunchy Top Disease among Four Cultivars of Musa sp.

چکیده

Banana bunchy top disease (BBTD) is an invasive viral spreading in Africa. It transmitted by banana aphids and infected planting material, causing production losses. Clean seeds timely eradication of diseased plants are effective tools BBTD management. These depend on detection. We assessed the relationship between symptom expression infectivity virus four cultivars banana. Plantlets from cultivars, ‘FHIA 25’; ‘Aloga’; ‘Ebenga’ ‘Sotoumon’, were exposed to viruliferous monitored for expression. They also tested as sources transmission fortnightly allowing non-viruliferous acquisition access prior transfer healthy test plants. The time required show symptoms compared, infection PCR. Disease varied weeks 25’ fifteen ‘Sotoumon’. Only symptomatic leaves positive could act sources. Overall, was most susceptible cultivar, while ‘Sotoumon’ least rapidly expressive BBTD, yet there no difference leaf emergence rate cultivars. results present important aspects control safety materials that should be field.

Comparative susceptibility of two banana cultivars to Banana bunchy top virus under laboratory and field environments.

Field and laboratory experiments were carried out on the island of Oahu, HI, to compare the susceptibility of the two most commonly grown banana (Musa sp.) cultivars in the state ('Dwarf Brazilian' or Santa Catarina [locally known as dwarf apple] and 'Williams') to the aphid-borne Banana bunchy top virus (genus Babuvirus, family Nanoviridae, BBTV). Several morphological and physiological featur...

Diagnosis of banana bunchy top virus in Red banana

Banana Bunchy Top Disease (BBTD) caused by the Banana Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV), is the most serious virus disease of banana and plantain worldwide. Detection of the BBTV infection in the planting material could help in the effective management of the disease in banana. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was used to detect the of banana bunchy top virus at early stages of infection in banana...

Reassortment and concerted evolution in banana bunchy top virus genomes.

The nanovirus Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV) has six standard components in its genome and occasionally contains components encoding additional Rep (replication initiation protein) genes. Phylogenetic network analysis of coding sequences of DNA 1 and 3 confirmed the two major groups of BBTV, a Pacific and an Asian group, but show evidence of web-like phylogenies for some genes. Phylogenetic ana...

Antioxidant and Antihyperglycemic Properties of Three Banana Cultivars (Musa spp.)

Background. This study sought to investigate the antioxidant and antihyperglycemic properties of Musa sapientum (Latundan banana) (MSL), Musa acuminata (Cavendish banana) (MAC), and Musa acuminate (Red Dacca) (MAR). Materials and Methods. The sugar, starch, amylose, and amylopectin contents and glycemic index (GI) of the three banana cultivars were determined. Furthermore, total phenol and vita...

Evidence for two groups of banana bunchy top virus isolates.

Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV) DNA component 1 from isolates from 10 different countries was cloned and sequenced and the sequences were aligned and compared. This analysis indicated two groups: the South Pacific group (isolates from Australia, Burundi, Egypt, Fiji, India, Tonga and Western Samoa) and the Asian group (isolates from the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam). The mean sequence differe...
